Center for Biophotonics Science and Technology

Center Director: Dennis Matthews, PhD Lead Institution: University of California, Davis Partners: Alabama A&M University, Fisk University, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Mills College, Stanford University, UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, UT San Antonio The ability to image, analyze, and manipulate living tissue at the cellular and molecular level, in a noninvasive or minimally invasive manner, has become essential for continued progress in bioscience and medicine. Light is unique in that it can be utilized to perform exactly these functions; therefore, biophotonics is widely regarded as the key science upon which the next generation of clinical tools and biomedical research instruments will be based. To that end, the National Science Foundation commissioned the Center for Biophotonics Science & Technology (CBST) in 2002 at the UC Davis Health System in Sacramento, CA with a $52M, 10-year grant.
